How much does a hydraulic cylinder repair cost?
It depends entirely on what has failed. A straightforward seal kit and reassembly on a small ram is at the low end; a cylinder needing a new rod, a honed or replaced barrel and machined gland components costs considerably more. What we can promise is that we strip and measure the cylinder before quoting, so the figure you get reflects the actual condition rather than a guess. As a rule of thumb, a repair comes in well below the price of a new equivalent cylinder, and far below the cost of a bespoke replacement.
How long will my repair take?
Simple seal replacements are often turned round in a couple of days. Jobs needing parts machined from scratch, or seals sourced for an obsolete cylinder, take longer — and where we are waiting on a supplier we will tell you that rather than let the job go quiet. Breakdown work that is stopping a machine earning gets prioritised, so always say when you enquire if the equipment is out of service.
Can you repair a cylinder if there is no seal kit available?
Usually, yes. This is one of the main reasons customers come to us. We measure the old seals and source to specification rather than to part number, and where a gland, piston or wear ring is no longer available we machine a replacement in-house. For genuinely obsolete equipment, remaking the part from the worn original is often the only route left.
Do you work from drawings, or can you copy an existing part?
Both. Supply a CAD file or a dimensioned drawing and we will work to it, raising any queries about tolerances or datums before cutting metal. If no drawing exists — which is common on older machinery — bring us the worn component and we will measure it and produce a part that fits the assembly it has to go back into.
Do you do CNC turning as well as CNC milling?
Our CNC capability is milling. Turned work is done on manual centre lathes by time-served turners, which for one-offs, repairs and small batches is genuinely the faster and more economical route — there is no programming or fixturing time before the first cut. If you need high-volume CNC turning we will say so rather than take work we are not set up for.
What materials do you work with?
Mild and carbon steels, stainless steels, bronze and brass, aluminium, and engineering plastics such as nylon and PTFE for seal carriers, wear rings and bushes. If you are unsure whether a material is suitable for the application, that is worth a conversation before the part is made.
Do you take on one-off jobs, or only production work?
One-offs are the majority of what we do. A single shaft, one sleeved housing, one rebuilt cylinder — these are normal jobs here, not awkward exceptions. We also run small repeat batches where a component is programmed once and made again as needed.
Can you collect and deliver?
For customers around Newton Aycliffe, Darlington and the wider County Durham area, collection and delivery can usually be arranged — mention it when you enquire and we will confirm. Otherwise you are welcome to drop items at the workshop on Aycliffe Business Park during opening hours.
Where exactly are you based?
We are at Unit 8 Leaside, Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, DL5 6HX, on Aycliffe Business Park just off the A167 and a few minutes from the A1(M). Free parking on site, and there is space to unload from a van or trailer.
Do you offer emergency or out-of-hours repairs?
Our workshop hours are monday to friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm. Where a breakdown is stopping production or taking a machine off the road, we will do what we can to work around it, including arrangements outside normal hours.
