Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm
We strip, assess and rebuild hydraulic cylinders, then machine and weld the replacement parts ourselves. 60+ years of combined trade experience, all in one workshop on Aycliffe Business Park.
Seals no longer available? Cylinder obsolete? That is usually where we come in.

About JWB Engineering
Most hydraulic repairs need machining, and most machining jobs need a weld somewhere. We keep the lathe, the CNC mill, the welding bay and the fitting bench in the same building, which means a worn cylinder can be stripped, measured, remade and rebuilt without leaving our unit.
That matters most on older equipment. When the seal kit is no longer catalogued and the gland cannot be bought at any price, being able to make the part is the only thing that gets the machine working again.
Recent Work
Cylinder rebuilds, bespoke builds, welded stainless assemblies and machined components — every photograph is our own work.

Plenty of firms will take your cylinder, send it somewhere else, and add a margin. We are the workshop that the work actually happens in. When you ring, you speak to someone who will have the part in their hands.
It also means we can be honest about scope. A cylinder that looks like a simple seal job from the outside is quite often a rod and barrel job once it is open — and occasionally it is genuinely beyond economic repair. You will be told which, with the measurements to back it up.

How It Works
Ring or send a photo of the part. We will tell you straight away whether it is something we can help with.
Nothing gets quoted from the outside. The component is dismantled, cleaned and measured so the price reflects the actual condition.
What has worn, what is reusable, what needs remaking, and what it will cost. If it is not worth repairing we will say so.
Machined, welded, rebuilt and checked for fit, then ready to collect or delivered locally.
Common Questions
It depends entirely on what has failed. A straightforward seal kit and reassembly on a small ram is at the low end; a cylinder needing a new rod, a honed or replaced barrel and machined gland components costs considerably more. What we can promise is that we strip and measure the cylinder before quoting, so the figure you get reflects the actual condition rather than a guess. As a rule of thumb, a repair comes in well below the price of a new equivalent cylinder, and far below the cost of a bespoke replacement.
Simple seal replacements are often turned round in a couple of days. Jobs needing parts machined from scratch, or seals sourced for an obsolete cylinder, take longer — and where we are waiting on a supplier we will tell you that rather than let the job go quiet. Breakdown work that is stopping a machine earning gets prioritised, so always say when you enquire if the equipment is out of service.
Usually, yes. This is one of the main reasons customers come to us. We measure the old seals and source to specification rather than to part number, and where a gland, piston or wear ring is no longer available we machine a replacement in-house. For genuinely obsolete equipment, remaking the part from the worn original is often the only route left.
Both. Supply a CAD file or a dimensioned drawing and we will work to it, raising any queries about tolerances or datums before cutting metal. If no drawing exists — which is common on older machinery — bring us the worn component and we will measure it and produce a part that fits the assembly it has to go back into.
Serving the Region
We are a couple of minutes from the A1(M), which puts most of County Durham and Teesside within a half-hour drive. On breakdown work that proximity is often the difference between a two-day repair and a two-week one.
Our own doorstep. We are on Aycliffe Business Park, so most local collections and deliveries happen the same day.
Around fifteen minutes down the A167, and one of our busiest areas for plant and trailer work.
A short run west, covering agricultural and contracting customers across south-west Durham.
Straight up the A167 or A1(M) for manufacturing and facilities maintenance work.
Close enough for quick turnaround on breakdown jobs from the industrial estates north of us.
Minutes away, with a long local history of rail and heavy engineering work.
Reached easily via the A66 for process, chemical and heavy industrial customers.
Regular work across Teesside industry, including stainless fabrication and cylinder rebuilds.
Ring us and describe it, or bring it to the workshop and we will look at it with you. Either way you will get a straight answer.
